Keio University’s popular course, “Exploring Japanese Avant-garde Art Through Butoh Dance” is returning to FutureLearn, the free online learning platform.
This course will allow you to see how Japanese art absorbed, refigured, and influenced Western art in the 20th century through the dance of Tatsumi Hijikata, the founder of butoh dance. It will make use of a wide range of archival materials in order to introduce Hijikata’s butoh within the context of Japanese and international post-war art and culture.
The course is taught by Prof. Yohko Watanabe and Director Takashi Morishita of the Keio University Art Center, which is the home of the Tatsumi Hijikata Archive, as well as Rosa van Hensbergen, a doctoral student at the University of Cambridge.
