Takiguchi Shuzo 120th Anniversary Exhibition: Books as a Wilson- Lincoln System
This year marks the 120th anniversary of the birth of Shuzo Takiguchi. To commemorate this anniversary, the Keio University Art Center, which owns a collection of Takiguchi's works, and Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design, will hold a joint project. This exhibition will be held at the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design (Shuzo Takiguchi Collection Room) and shares its theme with a symposium to be held at Keio University (East Research Building 6F G-LAB, Mita Campus). Shuzo Takiguchi (1903-1979), a poet, exhibition organizer, art critic, and plastic artist whose diverse activities included the production of mysterious books commonly referred to as "handmade brochure". These books are the handiwork of Takiguchi himself, and do not go through the process of publishers or printers. They are composed of magazine clippings, silver paper, labels and stickers, handwritten notes, and other so-called fragments, and appear to be both complete and incomplete. For Takiguchi, who wanted to create "a book that will never be bound or paged," it was very important for the book to be in a temporary state.
The Wilson-Lincoln System, similar to a double portrait, in which Wilson is seen from the left and Lincoln is seen from the right, is used in the "To and From Rrose Selavy".
This exhibition posits the general books distributed mainly in bookstores and "handmade books" as opposites, and positions Takiguchi's "To and From Rrose Selavy" (1968) as an entity that oscillates between the two. Through "To and From Rrose Selavy," a book like the Wilson-Lincoln System, we will consider how Takiguchi viewed "books" and production, as well as what "books" are.
