Relations with Neighboring Countries in the Edo Period
Exhibition of illustrations, records, and historical documents from the Edo period concerning the “three countries” of Korea, Ryukyu, and Ezo, with which Japan has had a long history of close relations due to its geographical proximity. We shall examine the relations that Japan maintained with these neighboring countries, as well as its internal relations, after the establishment of a unified government and under a unique diplomatic policy of national isolation which began from the first half of the 17th century.
Although it is well known that Korea, Ryukyu, and Ezo came to be incorporated within modern Japan, through imagining the relations that Japan had with its closest neighbors during the Edo period we hope to gain clues on how we can carefully build diplomatic relationships in the future.
