Ana Mendieta
“I really feel that it’s important in my work to use dirt and sand because these (…) speak about the history of the world or of the earth, of nature, too.” (Ana Mendieta)
The Keio University Art Center (KUAC) has held a series of exhibitions focused on modern art every year since 2011. Last year, the new series “Standing Point” was launched to contemplate the potential of art in contemporary society through the works of artists whose lives have taken in the modern era.
The current exhibition, the second in this series, will introduce photographic works by Cuban-born artist Ana Mendieta (1948-85). Mendieta deeply immersed herself in the natural world, at times producing work which saw her becoming one with nature. The humanoid forms in natural scenes that Mendieta created using a variety of materials are in essence impressions of her physical body. Her works, deeply rooted in the earth, may also be taken as challenges to the western materialism which is an intrinsic aspect of modern societies.
