Recording the Late Edo period: NIJO Family Documents
The first exhibition "The World of Paleography I" titled as "From the Collection of Nomura Kanetaro" exhibited the historical documents about farming village. The next “The World of Paleography II" as "SAMURAI ReCords" exhibited about Samurai. Although these small exhibitions had only less than 20 display-items, they attempted to introduce fundamental historical records and could invite much audience.
This exhibition presents the documents of NIJO family which occupied a corner in the Gosetsu family. NIJO family was from generation to generation in charge of holding a secret ceremony "Sokui-Kanchou" (one of the emperor's coronation ceremony) and played a unique roll as "Kobu-Gattai-ha" in the Last Edo-period.
The documents of NIJO family have 2,300 meterials (1,300 diaries and records, 1,000 other paper materials), most of which come from the Late Edo to the beginning Meiji. This exhibition subtitled as "Recording the Late Edo period" features the hitorical events representing the Late Edo period and exhibits the related historical documents. The main records of them refer to Saikei, who was the head of the family and kept the close relationships with Shougun (Tokugawa Ieshige and Yoshinobu), Kyoto Shugoshoku (Matsudaira Katamori) and the Emperor Koumyou.
We hope that the audience could imagine that, appreciating the documents.
