Genetic Engine: Foreword
An art archive can be regarded as a “Genetic Engine.” Memories of individuals and organizations are quasi-materials which retain a dynamic mixture of facts and individual impressions. In contrast, a record is an externalized memory, and an archive is created at the point at which memories and records converge.
The Keio University Art Center (KUAC) began its art archive initiatives in 1998 with the opening of the Tatsumi Hijikata Archive, which has served as the model for our “Genetic Engine.” In 2018, to mark its 20th anniversary, we are planning a series of events and publications to reconsider and revise the composition of this “Genetic Engine.”
This exhibition will build on the overview of the anniversary project as a whole and allow visitors to learn about the Art Center’s archives through the inventory of correspondence in the Shuzo Takiguchi collection. In addition, the 16 catalogues of the foregoing series of “Introduction to Archives,” exhibitions will be displayed.
