Cityscape by Myōjō-in: A Temple as a Stationary Observer of a city Lecture and Guided Tour

Temples that have grown alongside cities are windows into the layers of historical and cultural heritage that urban spaces accumulate. They stand as witnesses to the stories of cities, connecting the past to the present.

Myōjō-in, a renowned Jōdo-shū temple with the distinguished status of a Jundanjin training and study hall, has been a center for Buddhist practice and scholarship since its founding in 1763. Located in Akabanebashi, it has evolved its role and space while observing the ever-changing cityscape.

In this special lecture and guided tour, led by the temple’s head priest, we will delve into the cityscapes of Tokyo from the Edo period to the present day. Drawing on historical materials, we will explore the urban landscape through the perspective of Myōjō-in. Additionally, we’ll learn how temples in a bustling metropolis like Tokyo have adapted their culture and design amidst rapid urban development while striving to preserve their heritage.
