Connecting through Art Archives: Archives for the Preservation and Creation of Culture
Since 1998, Keio University Art Center has been engaged in constructing and managing art archives, which mainly relates to Japanese avant-garde arts in post-war period.
The resources of the Japanese avant-garde arts from 1950s to 80s are now facing a big shift, which is caused by several factors: re-location / dissipation of the resources due to the change of rights holders, rapidly growing interests from international and interdisciplinary researchers, and so on.
Given these circumstances, the yet young Japanese art archives have lots of subjects that needs considerable discussions. Starting from the most urgent issue to avoid the dissipation, that is, the location survey and preservation of the resources, how to run sustainable archives, how archives collaborate each other, and how to encourage the use of the resources beyond the border of the countries and disciplines.
In this workshop, we hope to host an active and practical discussion with the participants, who are working at art archives or similar cultural institutions, with the talks by Dr Liza Kirwin & Dr Karen B. Weiss from the Archives of American Art.
