Ambarvalia XIV Junzaburo and the Fukuiku: A Fresh Look at Modernism and Its Impact
The Ambarvalia Festival, which commemorates the birth of Junzaburo Nishiwaki, has been held annually in January since 2012. For this year’s programming, Keio will hold a symposium discussing Junzaburo Nishiwaki and modernism. Kiwao Nomura will open the event by giving an overview of the relationship between modern Japanese poetry and modernism followed by a presentation from Hiromasa Wakita about Yukio Haruyama, a man who stood at the vanguard of Japanese modernism through his poetic writings. This talk will delve into the time Haruyama spent as an editor for Shi to Shiron (“Poetry and Poetic Theory”) where he built a deep connection with Nishiwaki. Finally, we will hear from Motonori Sato about the relationship between Nishiwaki’s poetry and British modernist literature, T. S. Eliot, and James Joyce. We invite everyone to share in this opportunity to take a closer look at modernism and its impact on Nishiwaki’s poetic work, a first for the Ambarvalia Festival!
