Exploring Avant-Garde Theatre Vol.1: Research Screening of Kazuo Ohno’s Butoh Performance, "Admiring La Argentina"
There will be a screening of Kazuo Ohno's legendary performance, Admiring La Argentina from the VIC Collection.* This solo work by Kazuo Ohno was directed by Tatsumi Hijikata and premiered at the Daiichi Seimei Hall in Tokyo in November 1977. Ohno would end up performing this 119 times around the world until 1994. Admiring La Argentina celebrates Antonia Mercé, also known as La Argentina, who is recognized as a prominent innovator of Spanish dance. Ohno's creativity was inspired by his experience of seeing Antonia Mercé perform in Japan at the Imperial Theatre in 1929, where he was deeply moved by her performance. The VIC video of this premiere, one of butoh's most representative performances, is an exceptional resource for research on butoh and the avant-garde art movement of that era. This event will be a rare chance to introduce materials that are usually only available at the Keio University Art Center to the Kansai region.
In Part I, Kae Ishimoto from the Tatsumi Hijikata Archive in the Keio University Art Center will give a presentation about the Art Center and the VIC collection, followed by a full-length screening of Admiring La Argentina.
In Part II, Hayato Kosuge from the Keio University Faculty of Science and Technology will give an overview of the butoh of Kazuo Ohno, and Yasushi Nagata from the Osaka University Nakanoshima Art Center will join him for a discussion on underground theatre and trends in butoh.
*VIC (Video Information Center | 1972–present) is a movement that used video to record a wide variety of events and experimentally broadcast television from the 1970s to the 1980s (such as “Paravision Ten” in 1978, an experiment in CATV broadcasting in apartment buildings).
