慶應義塾大学アート・センター Keio University Art Center

The Keio University Art Center has been registered as a registered museum.

The Keio University Art Center relocated to its current location in the South Annex of the Mita campus in 2011 and opened a dedicated exhibition facility, "Art Space," on the first floor of the building. Furthermore, in 2013, we applied to the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education and was designated as a "museum equivalent facility" under the former Museum Law. Under the Museum Law, it is stipulated that credits required for obtaining the curator qualification, specifically for museum internships, must be earned through internships at registered museums or equivalent facilities. Until now, the  Keio University Art Center has supported students in obtaining their curator qualifications through internships at this museum-equivalent facility.

In April 2022, the "Act to Partially Amend the Museum Law" was promulgated, coming into effect in April 2023. This marks the first major revision of the law in nearly 70 years, and it included a review of the registration requirements for museums. Under the previous Museum Law, museums operated by incorporated educational institution could only apply as museum equivalent facilities, but the revised law now permits museums operated by incorporated educational institution to be registered as official museums.

In response to this legal revision, the Keio University Art Center re-applied to the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education for registration as a "registered museum." Following the review process, it was newly registered as a "registered museum" on December 23, 2024. Moving forward, the Art Center will continue to hold exhibitions at Art Space, build and operate research archives, conduct investigations and research on university collections, engage in educational activities targeting both the university and integrated education schools, as well as collaborate with the local community. These efforts will contribute to the advancement of art research both domestically and internationally.
